Joel Matip could head out the exit door at Liverpool in the summer with the Cameroon defender entering the final year of his contract.
The 31-year-old has long been a key figure for Jurgen Klopp’s side but a rebuild of the Liverpool ranks is understood to be on the cards after the Anfield giants have failed to meet expectations with their performences this season.
According to a report from Goal, it is claimed that Matip could look for a fresh challenge elsewhere with Liverpool’s first choice centre-back pairing likely to be in the shape of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
Moreover, the England international Joe Gomez had penned a long-term extension with Liverpool last summer and he could present his case as a homegrown squad option
Matip was Klopp’s first signing as the Liverpool manager but the latter could be forced to deem the centre-back surplus to requirements should the Reds have their eye on a younger option to fill the void in the backline.
