Joel Matip recalls ‘Confusion’ during THAT Divock Origi goal vs Barcelona

Liverpool centre back Joel Matip admitted to having been left confused by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick corner that completed the Reds’ stunning Champions League fightback against Barcelona last season in a 4-0 win.

Jurgen Klopp’s unit entered the second leg of a heavyweight semi-final clash at with the La Blaugrana at Anfield trailing 3-0 on aggregate following a humbling trip to the Camp Nou.

Many fans including the Liverpool faithful considered the tie to be over before the second leg, but another thrilling European night was in store at Anfield as the Premier League side claimed the most remarkable of wins to progress through to the final.

Divock Origi’s second goal of the game booked a place in the Champions League final, as Liverpool continued their love affair with the European title bringing the trophy back to Anfield for the sixth time in the clubs illustrious history. However, the scenes in Madrid would not have occurred if Trent Alexander-Arnold hadn’t teed up the Belgian with a clever set-piece.

Cameroonian defender Joel Matip was making his way forward for the corner when the ball nestled the back of the net, and the defender conceded that he was initially left baffled by what exactly took place.

The 28-year-old defender explained his experiences on a memorable night to the club’s official website, recalling his confusion over the celebrations, “I was slowly on the way to the box, so in centre-back style, I was slowly going from back to front! I thought maybe in 20 seconds there would be a corner coming in or something like this; I came forward and had a nice view of the whole situation. It was crazy. I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t know what had happened because he just put the ball in. I thought, ‘What is this?’ Then I saw Divock there and the ball in the net afterwards… I was a little bit confused, to be honest. But after a few seconds, everybody was celebrating so I just joined in.”
