Jose Enrique suggests Liverpool to go after Barcelona maestro Frenkie de Jong

Former Liverpool player Jose Enrique has suggested that Jurgen Klopp should consider signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona as a game-changer for Liverpool.

With the departures of key midfield players like Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Milner, there is an opportunity for the club to bring in a new talented player at that position.

De Jong, who was previously linked with a move to Liverpool, is seen by Enrique as the perfect fit for the club.

Enrique was asked about the perfect midfielder signing for the Reds and shared his thoughts on the potential signing of De Jong.  As reported by Liverpool Echo, he said:

“For me, it could be many options, but a number eight is what we (Liverpool) need the most. Obviously, Jude Bellingham is not available anymore. It would be Frenkie De Jong and, for Newcastle, it would be Mane.”

While De Jong could significantly enhance Liverpool’s midfield, his potential move depends on his willingness to leave Barcelona, where they recently clinched the league title.

Manchester United was previously leading the race for his signature, but a deal did not materialize. However, Liverpool was also actively pursuing the former Ajax player.

One of De Jong’s key strengths is his versatility, as he can excel as a holding midfielder, a box-to-box engine, or in an advanced creative role. This adaptability would provide Jurgen Klopp with the opportunity to experiment with various formations and tactics.

Moreover, the 26-year-old’s playing style harmonizes perfectly with Liverpool’s philosophy. His work rate, pressing abilities, and intelligence off the ball make him an ideal fit for Klopp’s high-energy, gegenpressing system.

De Jong possesses the tenacity to quickly regain possession and the composure on the ball to initiate swift counterattacks.

However, as the transfer saga unfolds, the likelihood of seeing the 26-year-old in a Liverpool jersey is quite low as he appears committed to staying at Barcelona.

While Liverpool could greatly benefit from his calibre and significantly improve their midfield, the player’s own desires play a crucial role in the decision. If De Jong chooses to remain in Barcelona, there is little that can be done to alter the situation.
