Jurgen Klopp has hit out at former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher, who is now a pundit for Sky Sports, for his recent remarks on the Merseyside outfit’s weak depth in the centre-back spot following Virgil van Dijk’s ACL injury.
Carragher had earlier called upon his former side to look at other options, including RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upcamyeo as possible alternatives to fill the void left by Van Dijk. He had also spoken against Liverpool FC being inactive in the summer transfer window on shoring up their defensive options, particularly after Dejan Lovren’s move to Zenit.
However, it seems as if Carragher’s comments have not gone well with the Liverpool FC boss, who, in his pre-match interview ahead of the Ajax fixture, justified his summer buying, and threw a rather snide remark at the Reds old boy.
“We went into the season with three centre backs plus Fabinho as cover and some youngsters,” said the German coach.
“It’s hard to have four world-class centre halves.
“If anyone wants to tell us we made a mistake – I think Carragher mentioned already – there are a few reasons why they don’t do this job.”
With the Dutch international’s recent injury requiring immediate surgery, Van Dijk is sidelined for the remainder of the 2020-21 season, reports suggest, and this comes as a major blow to the Reds’ title chances for the ongoing Premier League campaign.
