Liverpool confirms Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery on injured knee

Liverpool FC have confirmed early fears existing over star centre-back Virgil van Dijk’s injury layoff following the player being taken out by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in an off-the-ball challenge in Saturday’s Merseyside derby game.

The Merseyside club, in an announcement made on its official website, liverpoolfc.com, stated that Van Dijk will undergo surgery on his knee, due to the Dutch international injuring his knee ligaments in the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park.

He will also be subject to further assessment on his present injury woes, and a rehabilitation programme will also be undergone by Van Dijk as he works his way to full fitness over the course of the layoff.

Van Dijk had to be substituted off the pitch merely six minutes after play had commenced at Goodison Park, with Joe Gomez taking his fellow defender’s spot on the pitch, moments following Sadio Mane’s opening goal gave the Reds a lead.

The 29-year old’s absence for Jurgen Klopp’s side will come as a major blow to the Reds’ chances of defending their Premier League crown and will see the Liverpool FC boss fret over the lack of first-team options at centre-back at Anfield.
