Lack of investment the reason for Liverpool’s under-fire form, says club legend Souness

Graeme Souness believes the reason for Liverpool FC’s current run of woeful form can be attributed to the Merseyside outfit’s reluctance to spend on big-money players after their title-winning triumph last season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had failed to supplement their existing first-team ranks in the last summer, with the likes of Kostas Tsimikas, Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara being the only additions to Anfield.

Following his old club slump to a third consecutive loss at Anfield after Manchester City walked away rather comfortably with a 4-1 win on their trip to Merseyside, Souness laid the blame on the Reds for failing to bring in more reinforcements after clinching Champions League and Premier League glory in successive seasons, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

‘When you’re at the top of the tree, that’s when you go and invest big.

‘I would think if you’re the current champions, European champions year before, I’m sure you could find a bank willing to support you. That’s the time to invest.’

Souness’s recent remarks are expected to cause a furore amongst the fanbase of the Reds as arguments could be raised in favour of Jurgen Klopp’s ability in landing the much-coveted signature of Thiago Alcantara, who has failed to hit the ground running since his move to England last summer.

Diogo Jota’s arrival on Merseyside too was quite well received by many, including Souness, and the former Wolves forward showcased a brilliant run of form in front of the goal prior to sustaining a long-term injury.
