Jurgen Klopp’s men went three points clear at the top of the Premier League standings thanks to a late winner from Roberto Firmino giving the Merseysiders a 2-1 win over Jose Mourinho’s Spurs, as the defending champions resorted to their usual winning ways after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham.
First-half goals from either side, with Salah opening the scoring and Son Heung-min levelling shortly, looked all set to conclude the mid-week fixture 1-1, but a moment of brilliance from Firmino in the final minutes of the game came in clutch for Liverpool FC.

The hosts were on the front foot right from the start of the game as Mourinho’s men resorted to their usual gameplan of sitting far back on the pitch, awaiting a glorious chance to trouble the opposition on the counter.
Firmino and Salah got early chances to find the back of the net, but either effort on the Spurs goal was easily gathered by Hugo Lloris.
The Reds, however, soon found the breakthrough when a Curtis Jones link-up play allowed Salah another effort to plunder through on goal, and a heavy deflection off Spurs defender Eric Dier took the ball past Lloris to give a well-deserved lead to Liverpool FC.
Despite not being as prolific in their attacking endeavours as their opponents, the first attack that the visitors fashioned turned out to be a clinical one, as Giovani Lo Celso’s clever pass was finished superbly by Son, and a lengthy VAR check did not disapprove of the visitor’s leveller.
Early on in the second half, Klopp’s side had to endure a flurry of Spurs counter-attacks, and one that was led by Bergwijn nearly gave Mourinho’s side the lead as the Dutchman’s effort crashed against the post.
On the other end of the pitch, a great solo play by Mane could also only rattle the crossbar and both sides went into the final ten minutes of the game on the hunt for the winner.
And it was Liverpool FC who secured the win in dramatic fashion as a late corner delivery from Andy Robertston was peach perfect for the lurking Roberto Firmino to head into the top corner of the net, sending Klopp’s men to the top of the pile in the league standings.
