Neither of the two sides were able to find a clear cut chance on goal but City threaded through to force an important save from Alisson Becker in the 21st minute.

Bernardo Silva’s fantastic close control allowed him to hold possession in the centre of the park and then move into a dangerous space as he approached the Liverpool penalty box before lobbing over his pass over to Phil Foden.

Alisson was called into action as he came off his goalline to block Foden’s attempt from close range, which was followed by the lurking De Bruyne slotting a shot across the Liverpool goalkeeper to no avail.

Liverpool held their nerves to head into the half-time break at nil-nil despite being clearly overpowered by Manchester City over the course of the opening 45 minutes.

The hosts, however, got back to their very best early on in the second half and Mohamed Salah was the architect of a fantastic build-up play which culminated in Sadio Mane easing his finish past Ederson to make it 1-0 for the Merseysiders.

City too got in on the action and Foden, who had looked dangerous in front of the goal all evening, had his name on the scoresheet as he drilled an effort past Alisson to level the scoreline.

Liverpool returned to become the leaders once again and it was Salah who found the back of the net this time after a superb run of play by the Egyptian which left the City backline hapless.

Jurgen Klopp’s men could not seal the win which they had merited as Kevin de Bruyne’s strike took a deflection off Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip to send Alisson the wrong way and make it 2-2 with the final whistle soon being sounded out to mark an end to a fantastic affair on Merseyside.
