A much-changed XI for the home side got the game underway on the front foot and could have taken a very early lead through Diogo Jota who was stopped in his tracks by the Saints backline.

Jota, however, was there to tuck in a superb delivery into the box from Andy Robertson to make it 1-0 for Liverpool inside the opening two minutes.

Alisson Becker was called into action on the opposite end of the pitch after Thiago Alcantara was robbed of possession and the Liverpool No.1 had to deny James Ward-Prowse.

Southampton forward Armando Broja rushed in on the Liverpool goal after a misplaced throw-in from Alexander-Arnold but Alisson kept his ground to put out another important save.

The Reds added to their tally before the half-time break with Mohamed Salah squaring the ball for Jota to find the back of the net for his second goal of the game.

Liverpool found a third too seven minutes before the interval with Thiago Alcantara’s strike catching a deflection from Lyanco and going past Alex McCarthy.

The second period started well for the hosts who all but rubbed stamped the three points when Virgil van Dijk low drove Arnold’s corner delivery for Liverpool’s fourth and final goal.

Defensive resilience from Klopp’s men ensured another resounding win for the Merseysiders who now have bitter rivals Everton to look forward to come next week at Goodison Park.
