Liverpool Boss Makes Decision On Simon Mignolet’s Future

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he wants and expects Simon Mignolet to remain at the club for the 2019/20 season despite the fact that the Belgian wants regular football elsewhere.

Last season Liverpool made it to the Champions League final in an astounding manner but tasted bitter memories when Loris Karius made two shocking errors to gift Real Madrid the title. Klopp looked into the situation last summer and splashed big transfer funds to sign Alisson Becker from AS Roma in a £60 million deal.

The Brazilian’s arrival has provided an incredible cover for Liverpool in their last line of defense as he kept the highest number of clean sheets in the Premier League. The 26-year-old also made some tremendous saves in the Champions League including the final against Tottenham Hotspur which incidentally allowed the Reds to lift the Champions League for the sixth time in their illustrious history.

Alisson’s displays have kept Mignolet out of the first team and the 31-year-old managed only two starts across all competitions this season, one in the League Cup and FA Cup respectively. Liverpool was dumped out of both the competitions in the first round and Mignolet believes that it is time for him to move away from Merseyside in order to sustain regular football.

But Klopp is keen for Mignolet to remain at Anfield and when asked about his back up goalkeeper, the 52-year-old German said, “Yes. I would say, yes. I have had a lot of conversations with him in the last couple of years and months. We spoke before we left (for the summer break).”

Klopp also added that he feels Mignolet is a top class goalkeeper and Liverpool may need to call upon him on certain occasions, “It is because at a club like Liverpool you need two number ones, at least, in the club. That’s cool with Ali and Simon. A good situation for the club and a situation you should have. Everything is fine from my point of view.
