Liverpool Cling On To Beat Chelsea

The Reds were not at their fluent attacking best at Stamford Bridge on Sunday but still managed to earn a 2-1 win to maintain their five-point lead over fierce rivals Manchester City at the top of the pile.

Jurgen Klopp’s table toppers looked on course to win in comfort as right back Trent Alexander-Arnold’s magnificent free-kick and Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino’s header gave them complete control heading into half time at 2-0.

But Chelsea was a tad unfortunate to have a goal rightly ruled out for an equalizer when Cesar Azpilicueta’s close-range finish was ruled taken away for offside by VAR, However, the hosts were in no mood to capitulate after the break and made Liverpool fight every inch of the way to maintain that perfect 100 percent win record in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s top scorer Tammy Abraham had chances to increase his tally of seven goals this season, particularly when he was denied by Liverpool keeper Adrian when clean through in the first period, but it was left to French midfielder N’Golo Kante to set up a grandstand finish with a superb strike with 19 minutes until the full-time whistle.

Liverpool, though managed to hold on, surviving missed chances from Michy Batshuayi and Mason Mount in the final few stages, to take the three points.

The Merseyside giants have now won six of their opening six games in the Premier League and are serious contenders to Manchester City for the title. The win against Chelsea was also a great comeback because of the Champions League defeat against Napoli during the week.
