Liverpool defender Rhys Williams joins Championship side Blackpool in loan deal

Liverpool defender Rhys Williams has signed for Championship side Blackpool in a season-long loan deal which runs until the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

The young centre-back has been shipped out on loan for the coming season keeping in mind the intense competition for places in the defensive ranks at Anfield with Jurgen Klopp having four viable options to choose from.

According to a statement published on the club’s official website, Championship outfit Blackpool have signed the 21-year-old Williams who emerged as a surprise first-team regular during the backend of the 2020-21 season following the injury crisis.

Williams had been loaned out to Swansea City last term after putting pen to paper on a long-term extension at Anfield with Klopp pleased with the youngster’s progress and considering the defender a part of his future plans.

Speculation doing the rounds suggests that Williams’ centre-back partner in the last leg of the 2020-21 campaign, Nat Phillips, could soon head out the exit door himself with a host of clubs eyeing up a move for the 24-year-old.
