Liverpool’s quest for midfield reinforcements has led them to Porto’s Alan Varela, with discussions underway for a potential £60 million transfer.
After bolstering their midfield with Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister ahead of the 2023/24 season, the Reds, now managed by Arne Slot, are seeking a defensively minded midfielder to challenge Wataru Endo.
Reports suggest that Liverpool dismissed a £40 million bid for Atalanta’s Ederson earlier this summer.
However, they are now eyeing Varela, who has a £60 million release clause in his Porto contract. According to Football Insider, internal talks with Porto have been held, signaling Liverpool’s serious interest.
The Reds have previously enjoyed success in the Portuguese market, securing deals for Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, and are eager to return under the guidance of their data-driven scouting system led by Michael Edwards.

Varela moved to Porto from Boca Juniors for £6.8 million last summer and played in 43 games in the 2023/24 season.
He was in eight Champions League games, helping Porto get to the last 16 before they lost to Arsenal in a shootout.
Over the season, Varela stood out for his strong defense, with an average of 0.8 tackles and 1.3 clears for every 90 minutes played.
Being linked to Liverpool after just one season in a top European league highlights the 22-year-old’s rapid development.
Porto is set to make a significant profit on Varela, whose playing style has drawn comparisons to former Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano.
Porto manager Sergio Conceicao has acknowledged these similarities, praising Varela’s tactical discipline and defensive prowess.
“I needed a player to fill the role of Matheus Uribe,” Conceicao explained to O Jogo in February. “I saw potential in Varela to slot into the defensive line when a central defender advances. He didn’t push forward often, but that was tactical. He positions well, distributes accurately, and has a strong shot. His development has been impressive.”
As Liverpool continues to seek midfield reinforcements, Alan Varela’s potential move to Anfield could provide the defensive solidity and tactical flexibility the Reds are looking for. With comparisons to a player of Mascherano’s caliber, Varela’s addition could prove to be a valuable asset for Liverpool’s ambitions in the coming seasons.
