Liverpool get an idea of what to expect in the UCL

Liverpool’s UCL group stage opponents had mixed fortunes this past weekend. PSG, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade all had league matches this weekend with very different results.

“Minnows” Red Star Belgrade continued their 100% start to the campaign with 6 wins out of 6. They defeated Vojvodina away 4 goals to 1. This should be the least important result to Liverpool as they should easily overpower the Serbian champions. Anything less than 6 points would be a bad result for the Reds, considering the strength of their other opponents.

Napoli had a disastrous day as they succumbed to their first loss of the season. They lost 3-0 away at Sampdoria. Carlo Ancelloti would certainly look to re-invigorate his squad in this international break with the Champions League fast approaching.

The most interesting match of the lot was PSG’s match against Nimes (Ligue 2’s champions last season). PSG were pegged back after they were leading by 2-0. Nimes equalised only for PSG to bulldoze through at the end. The French Champions won the match by 4 goals to 2.

The game was steeped in controversy as Kylian Mbappe was sent off for shoving Teji Savanier to the ground. Mbappe will miss the league match before the Liverpool game which will keep him rather fresh and raring to go at Anfield.

Mbappe and Neymar have scored 4 goals each in the Ligue 1, leading the scoring charts. Sadio Mane is also leading the scoring charts in the Premier League having scored 4 goals himself.

The match up between Liverpool and PSG has all the ingredients to become a classic. Both teams have an amazing attack and like to play fluid attacking football. It will be down to the defences as to who can hold the other team’s attack better.
