Liverpool icon Steve McManaman has urged his former side to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol who has admitted his love for the Reds in the recent past.
The Bundesliga defensive talent has courted interest from several other Premier League clubs ahead of this summer when he is likely to have offers on the table and could be heading out the exit door at Leipzig.
With Liverpool preparing to overhaul their squad over the summer after a disappointing campaign this term, Jurgen Klopp could be in the market for a new central defender as the long-serving Joel Matip’s future remains up in the air.
Liverpool’s mainstay Virgil van Dijk has not been at his usual best this season due to recurring injury troubles which have also affected the game time of Ibrahima Konate who recently returned to the fold for the remainder of the season.
Reportedly, the former Liverpool midfielder McManaman said that the Reds could look to make an approach to sign the Croatian international Gvardiol who ticks all the right boxes to join Klopp’s backline.
“He’s young, he’s experienced with RB Leipzig and Croatia and he likes Liverpool, doesn’t he?
“It’s easy to say that he would be the perfect defensive addition they can make this summer, but it all depends on what Liverpool have got because if they bring in another centre-half.
“They’ve got Ibrahima Konaté who’s young, they’ve got Virgil van Dijk, they’ve got Joël Matip and Joe Gomez, so somebody would have to leave for this move to happen.
“Is he a great centre-half? Yes. Is he young? Yes. He ticks all the right boxes but I just don’t know whether Liverpool will bring him in as they’d have to get rid of at least two centre-halves to keep everybody happy. He’s a wonderful player but I just don’t know about that one yet.”
