Liverpool keen on Dayot Upamecano’s defensive partner Ibrahima Konate

Dayot Upamecano’s partner Ibrahima Konate in the RB Leipzig backline has caught Liverpool FC’s eye ahead of the summer’s transfer window, according to reports from the Mirror.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have fallen short on first-team options in their defensive core, especially after long-term injury layoffs for both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, with the first-choice central defender pairing not expected to feature again this season.

And with constant concerns over Joel Matip’s recurring run-in with issues on the injury front, Klopp is understood to be harbouring desires of adding serious firepower to a depleted Liverpool FC backline and Leipzig duo Upamecano and Konate are seen as viable options to target in the summer.

The 22-year-old Upamecano is believed to be a major candidate on the Merseysiders’ shortlist following reports that Leipzig would not stand in the Frenchman’s way should he seek to exit the German outfit this summer as Liverpool FC and Chelsea engage in a contest to land the centre-back’s signing.

Konate too has courted considerable interest in his services from top clubs across Europe on the back of his solid showings for last season’s UEFA Champions League semi-finalists and Klopp’s men would need to fork out big money to bring the Leipzig first-teamer to Anfield.
