Celtic and Rangers are engaged in a closely fought battle to land the coveted signing of Liverpool FC loanee forward Taiwo Awoniyi, according to reports from 90Min.
The 23-year-old Nigerian striker was loaned out to Bundesliga side Union Berlin last summer, with the German outfit snapping up the capture of Reds outcast Loris Karius as well in a season-long loan agreement.
Awoniyi has emerged as a star attacking presence during his time away from the Anfield pitches and with five goals and two assists for Union Berlin in top-flight action, the youngster has courted interest from Celtic and Rangers, the latter being helmed by Liverpool FC icon Steven Gerrard.
The Old Firm foes are wanting to add the Reds employee to their rosters, with rumours suggesting that the two clubs could well be joined in the race to sign Awoniyi by a few Premier League teams.
Failure to secure a work permit to turn out for the Merseyside Reds since his move to Anfield in 2015 has meant that Awoniyi has never featured for the Anfield giants and his prolonged saga could be on the verge of a conclusion should either of the Scottish clubs fork out a reported fee of £5 million to sign the attacker.
