Liverpool to hold onto Rhys Williams amid Middlesbrough’s loan interest

Jurgen Klopp will turn down any potential interest in the 19-year-old Rhys Williams this coming January as the Liverpool FC boss struggles to cope up with injuries to first-choice central defender options Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.

Williams has been given first-team involvement in the Reds shirt to a large extent in recent months following the Merseysiders’ rising issues on the injury front, and the defensive starlet has impressed Klopp with his string of consistent showings at the back.

However, reports from The Sun indicate that Championship outfit Middlesbrough are understood to be wanting to sign Williams on a loan deal to shore up their backline options, but Klopp’s urge to use the teenage star in his first-team plans at Anfield will force Boro boss Neil Warnock to look elsewhere in the transfer market.

The midweek victory over Tottenham Hotspurs witnessed Williams getting his debut top-flight game for the Reds, with the Englishman putting in a solid display in dealing with Spurs skipper and star frontman Harry Kane.

Liverpool FC’s inclination to use current options at the club rather than bring in new faces in the January window is believed to be a major reason behind Klopp’s rejection of potential suitors interested in landing Williams’ signature.
