Liverpool urged by Anfield hero McManaman to sign a Sancho-type player

Ex-Liverpool man Steve McManaman believes Jurgen Klopp should prioritise signing a new winger this summer to amp up his attacking options in time for the start of the 2021-22 season.

Liverpool have dipped into the transfer market only once so far since the window commenced with French defender Ibrahima Konate arriving on Merseyside to provide a major boost to Klopp’s backline which had endured an injury crisis last season.

McManaman, however, is of the opinion that his old club should be looking for a Jadon Sanch-type talent to provide quality on the flanks for which Klopp has to depend upon his full-backs in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

Sancho, a player who had been linked with an Anfield switch in the past, became Manchester United’s marquee signing of the summer with the England international completing his move to Old Trafford earlier this week.

“Well they’ve brought in Konate haven’t they, the young lad,” McManaman said as quoted by The Express.

“They’ve got an abundance of central defenders now.

“I would like them to get a winger, you could even say a Sancho-typer player.

“But a winger because I think sometimes when they can’t break teams down they rely on Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Andy Robertson to do all the hard work.

“You can’t expect your right-back and your left-back to be your right-wingers and your left-wingers all the time.

“So I’d like them to get a bit of help. If you see [Mohamed] Salah, he likes to come inside.

“If you see [Diogo] Jota, he likes to play inside. Not many people go round the outside of defenders and change the angle of the cross when games are not going well, when you can’t break teams down.”
