Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo opens up on the criticism he has received

Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo opens up on the criticism he has received early on in his life on Merseyside after netting his debut goal for the Reds in the derby win over Everton.

Jurgen Klopp’s men claimed their first league win of 2023 on Monday in the 2-0 win against the Toffees with goals from Mohamed Salah and Gakpo who opened his account in his seventh outing for Liverpool.

Speaking to Viaplay Netherlands ( via The Liverpool Echo) in the aftermath of the game, Gakpo admitted that he understood the criticism that has come his way of late even though he remained unfazed by it.

“Of course, as a striker, you always want to score and give assists.

“In the end, though, it’s about winning and if that too doesn’t work out, then it’s tough.

“I have to be honest; I don’t really read it (criticism). I get it of course.

“That’s not so nice for any normal person, but you have to deal with that. I don’t think I get confused by that.

“I think I could have gone to Jurgen Klopp for that, but I didn’t. That was not necessary for me.”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher had been vocal in his criticism of Gakpo in a recent column with the played turned pundit saying that his old club should have prioritised signing a new midfielder in January over Gakpo.

The Reds are expected to bring in a fresh pair of legs for their engine room over the summer after postponing the recruitment since last year as Dormund starlet Jude Bellingham features high on the club’s wishlist.
