The home side had the first chance on goal through frontman Erling Haaland whose scooped finish over over Caoimhin Kelleher was too high.

Haaland, however, made amends minutes later when he was teed up by Kevin De Bruyne for the opener with the former whipping his strike past Kelleher into the back of the net.

Jürgen Klopp’s side levelled the game in th 20th minute with Fabio Carvalho, who was a late inclusion in the XI due to Roberto Firmino’s injury, slotting a precise effort into the bottom left corner.

Kelleher denied City midfielder Gundogan and the Liverpool No.1 then kept out Ake’s strike with both teams heading into the break with the score at 1-1.

The opening minutes of the second period saw frantic action on either side of the pitch as it was City who drew first blood with Mahrez curling past Kelleher to make it 2-1 for his side.

Mo Salah got the second equaliser of the night with the Liverpool talisman slotting Darwin Nunez’s pass into the goal as the City goalie Stefan Ortega was left helpless.

De Bruyne served a superb delivery into the box for Ake nodding his header across Kelleher to restore the lead for the hosts which proved enough in the end for them to book a spot in the Carabao Cup last eight.
