Napoli vs Liverpool Champions League preview

Defending champions Liverpool will take on last seasons Serie A runners up Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo where they lost 1-0 last season. The Reds were drawn in the same group with Napoli for the second season running and will hope they can overcome Carlo Ancelotti’s side this time around.

Naby Keita and Alisson are sidelined through injuries, with Alisson missing since the first Premier League game of the season after he picked up an injury in the game against Norwich City and will be out for some time more.

Divock Origi is the latest player sidelined after picking up an ankle injury during the 3-1 win over Newcastle at the weekend.

Roberto Firmino who started on the bench in the game against Newcastle but came on in the second half to inspire Liverpool to a 3-1 victory will lead the line, with Mane and Mo Salah flanking him.

Fabinho should continue at the base of midfield while captain Jordan Henderson is expected to return in place of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, having been rested last time out.

James Milner could also come back into the side at the expense of Georginio Wijnaldum, with the Dutchman due rest after a busy international break.

Virgil Van Dijk is certain to start in central defense with Andy Robertson another certainty at left-back, Jurgen Klopp might decide to bring Joe Gomez back into the side at the expense of either Joel Matip or Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.

Klopp will be wary of the attacking threat posed by Insigne on Liverpool’s right side and may start Gomez at right-back who is arguably better defensively than Alexander-Arnold.

Adrian will keep his place in goal with Alisson Out injured.

Meanwhile, Napoli has looked defensively suspect this season despite the center-back partnership of Kalidou Koulibaly and Kostas Manolas and Carlo Ancelotti will be worried about the threat of Liverpool’s front three.

But on the positive side, Napoli is stronger in attack this season with the addition of highly-rated Mexican star Hirving Lozano from PSV. Add in Insigne, Jose Callejon, Dries Mertens, and Milik Napoli have an attack to strike fear into any side
