Paul Merson says Liverpool are in need of a player like Jude Bellingham

Paul Merson has said that Liverpool are in need of a player like Jude Bellingham with the Dortmund talent linked with a move to Merseyside since the turn of the year.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are unlikely to capture the highly-rated England international this summer with Dortmund not expected to budge on their demand of retaining Bellingham after parting ways with Erling Haaland who signed for Manchester City.

Bellingham has emerged as a standout performer for both club and country over the past season and there is speculation that the teenage sensation will look to leave Dortmund come the summer of 2023 with Liverpool keen on moving in for his signature.

Liverpool could do with a fresh face to bolster their midfield ranks but after a busy summer window which saw Klopp splash a club-record fee to sign 34-goal dangerman Darwin Nunez, further business is expected to be delayed until next year.

As quoted by The Express, Ex-Arsenal man Paul Merson believes Liverpool would benefit greatly from bringing in a player of Bellingham’s ability with the pundit adding that Klopp’s side need a midfielder who can perform in the box-to-box role.

“I think Liverpool are crying out for a midfield player – I don’t think their midfield is strong enough.

“Jude Bellingham is a good player and I think he would be a great signing.

“Liverpool are currently relying solely on their full-backs for energy. Thiago’s not a box-to-box midfielder, and Jordan Henderson is another year older. They need legs in midfield and Jude Bellingham could be that box-to-box presence for the side.”
