Paul Robinson is surprised at Joe Gomez signing a new deal with Liverpool despite speculation of the centre-back leaving Anfield in this summer’s transfer window.
The England international Gomez decided to renew his terms on Merseyside and put pen to paper on a long-term contract to commit his future to Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead of the start of the new season.
Aston Villa had been credited with a strong interest in moving in for the defender who ultimately stayed put at Liverpool with Klopp ensuring he tied down the Londoner to a new deal to ward off his suitors in the market.
Gomez struggled for regular game time last season with his return from a lengthy spell on the sidelines coupled with the arrival of Ibrahima Konate leading to just 21 outings in all competitions for the 25-year-old.
Speaking to Football Insider, ex-England shot-stopper Robinson reckons that the Liverpool man could ask for an exit come next summer should he continue to stay down the pecking order as he eyes a spot in the England squad.
“From his point of view, I’m surprised to see him sign.
“I’m surprised he didn’t want to leave and become that main centre-half just like Van Dijk is at Liverpool.
“But on the other hand, he’s obviously been assured of game time and was happy with the role that was proposed.
“Within these five years there are still options to go out on loan and options to leave.
“It just gives the club that security with their asset and gives Liverpool four top-class centre-backs to lean on for this season.
“The situation could well change again next summer if he’s not playing as much as he wanted.
“The onus is now on him to show what he’s got now if he wants to get back into the England squad and become the partner for Van Dijk.”
