Reds defender Dejan Lovren being targeted by AS Roma

Serie A side AS Roma are plotting a move for Liverpool FC defender Dejan Lovren if the Italian side are unable to negotiate a permanent deal for on-loan centre back Chris Smalling with his parent club Manchester United FC.

After Smalling’s impressive performances since coming to Italy, AS Roma are delighted at the player’s progress and how quickly he has adapted to the Italian league. However, if the Italian side are not able to tie down Smalling for an extended stay at the club, AS Roma are prepared to look elsewhere for alternatives, and, it turns out that the side has identified Lovren as a potential signing for them in the summer.

Liverpool stalwart Dejan Lovren has fallen behind in the Red’s pecking order with the rise of fellow centre backs Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. Both of them have stepped up and put in decent showings alongside club-record signing centre back Virgil Van Dijk and have revitalised Liverpool FC’s defence after prior issues in previous seasons.

The current season has seen Lovren feature in much fewer appearances as compared to before, and it seems that the Croatian international might be clamouring for a move in the upcoming transfer window.

AS Roma could provide the Reds defender with the regular game time he needs, should they sign him from Liverpool FC in the summer. It is reported that the former Southampton player could cost the Serie A side anywhere between a sum of €4m and €5m, a meager amount of money considering Lovren’s quality and experience as a player. Given the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the transfer market, AS Roma would be delighted to reduce their spending to the maximum possible extent in order to sign Lovren.

The 30-year-old Lovren had been reported to be close to a move to AS Roma last season. However, the player had stayed at Anfield after speaking to Liverpool FC coach Jurgen Klopp and voiced his pleasure of continuing to play for the Reds. Lovren has made 130 Premier League appearances for the Liverpool FC squad since joining them from Southampton in 2014. He was also a part of the Champions League-winning team in 2019.
