Tough Times Were Key To Champions League Triumph, Says POTY Jordan Henderson

Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson believes that the club was determined to learn from their past mistakes heading into the 2019 Champions League final having fallen short on three previous occasions.  The English midfielder was also recently crowned as the PFA Player of the Year for the 2019-20 season after an incredible campaign with Liverpool.

Liverpool lost the Champions League decider against LaLiga giants Real Madrid the season before and also finished one point short in the race for the Premier League title during the 2018-19 season. Jurgen Klopp’s side, therefore, was no stranger to falling short of silverware until hitting the Champions League jackpot in June 2019.

The Reds made sure to get the job against Tottenham Hotspur done and dusted with goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi sealing a fairly comfortable 2-0 victory in the final last season.

The victory was due for a long time for Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and his team-mates, as the Liverpool skipper admitted that his side’s previous failures left them in a good position to beat North London giants Tottenham in the final. More so, Liverpool lost the Europa League final and League Cup final in 2016 which helped them improve and learn from their errors.

While speaking to BT Sport, the recently awarded Player Of The Year Jordan Henderson explained, that Liverpool did not want another repeat of their errors at the final hurdle, “It was an accumulative thing, if you obviously look at Madrid, the league that season if you look further back to the league finals and League One finals that were lost as well, So if you look back there were a few moments where we’ve been through those tough times together. We always responded in the right way and we always kept going and kept improving so I knew after the last game of the league, I knew it would in some way help us going into the final to make sure it wasn’t going to happen again.  Certainly the Madrid game, you learn a lot from playing in finals and especially a Champions League one. I felt we learnt a lot from that Madrid game.”
