Virgil van Dijk next in line to pen a new deal with Liverpool

Liverpool’s defensive mainstay Virgil van Dijk is suggested to be the next in line to sign a long-term deal on Merseyside, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on his Here We Go Podcast.

Van Dijk is all set to return to the football pitch in competitive play for the first time since October 2020 when he was sidelined for the 2020-21 campaign with an ACL injury following a clash with Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby affair.

His loss due to injury was a major setback for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side which struggled with the inconsistent form before managing to pick up the pace towards the backend of the season and secure a third-place finish in the standings.

According to Romano, Van Dijk will be following the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker in putting pen to paper on contract extensions at Anfield which commit their long-term future to the Liverpool shirt before heading into the new campaign.

The 30-year-old Van Dijk remains one of the most influential players on the Liverpool team sheet and his return is of much importance to Jurgen Klopp for his squad selection plans ahead of the opening day fixture at Carrow Road.
