Injured Liverpool FC defensive powerhouse Virgil van Dijk has undergone successful surgery on his knee ligament, reports from the Reds’ official website, Liverpoolfc.com confirmed.
The Dutch international had to be taken off the pitch at Goodison Park a fortnight back after a terrible lunging challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford on him left the 29-year old in no position to continue throughout the rest of the derby fixture.
Later reports had given confirmation to speculation that Van Dijk was set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to an ACL injury and that the ex-Southampton defender will undergo surgery on his injured knee before starting a rehabilitation programme, which the player will now go through with the assistance of the Merseyside outfit’s medical support staff.
Van Dijk’s injury meant that the Reds fell terribly short on first-team options in the centre-back position, which led to Jurgen Klopp being forced to draft Fabinho into that role, prior to the Brazillian also being a victim to a recent hamstring issue after the mid-week Champions League win at Anfield.
