Reds defender Andrew Robertson has revealed that Liverpool is missing some sort of spark which helped them reach last season’s Champions League final.
The defeat against Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday night came as a massive shock to plenty of Liverpool fans across the world. Two goals in the first half an hour of the game from Milan Pavkov was enough for the Serbian side to brush off the traveling Reds, who seems to create chances but couldn’t really take any of them.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made three changes to his starting lineup after the 1-1 draw against North London giants Arsenal during the weekend. But those changes backfired as Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino were subbed on at halftime itself for Trent Alexandre Arnold and Daniel Sturridge.
The Merseyside giants are still giving Manchester City an impressive challenge for the Premiership as they sit in third place in the league. But with just three wins in nine games across all competitions off late, Liverpool seem to have lost some mojo, and that was clarified by Scottish left-back Andrew Robertson.
While speaking to the Guardian at Melwood on the team’s return to Merseyside, the 24 year old Robertson explained that the performances are quite effective but some spark in the forward line which used to win us games 4 or 5 nil, is missing at the moment, “I think it’s one of those periods we need to get through, Last season everyone was used to us scoring four or five goals. That can’t be possible every single game. At times we’ve dug out results, in the Premier League more so this season.”
Robertson added, “Maybe it’s not been as good to look at but we’ve been effective at it. Maybe we are missing a bit of a spark in terms of not winning four- or five-nil in most games but if he [Klopp] thinks that then we need to try to get it back. We need to come together as a team and try to give what the gaffer wants, try to get the spark and try to win games more comfortably.”
I think it’s a case of extravagant profligacy at Liverpool at the moment. Their front line is performing but not taking their chances as they come and this is disrupting the whole team’s rhythm. Jurgen Klopp needs to find a solution quickly before it’s too late.
