Andy Robertson named Scotland captain

Andy Robertson has been named Scotland captain for their upcoming fixtures against Belgium and Portugal and very deservedly so. He made his first start for the national side in 2014 and will be leading out his nation against 2 of the world’s best sides in less than 4 years.

Robertson’s rise has been absolutely meteoric. He was playing in the Scottish third division just 6 years ago and has now made himself a main-stay for both club and country.

Andy Robertson made his first national appearance as a substitute against Poland which they won 1-0. Scotland manager Gordon Strachen said afterwards “Andy came on there and the first time he picked it up he drove about 30 yards. I thought ‘that’s fantastic’. Absolutely no grey area, I’m going to do what I do. I loved seeing that first touch.”

Robertson has since made 22 appearances for his country scoring 2 goals in the process. Some would say that he hasn’t become a veteran yet and doesn’t deserve this opportunity, but Robertson has gone from strength to strength in the last couple of season. That is exactly what the country would be hoping for themselves after missing out on the World Cup.

Liverpool fans would also get the opportunity to see Robertson in this new role of Captain. It would be a good asset to the Reds as they’ll have another “leader” alongside Van Dijk in defence which is essential for any side to succeed. Arsenal have been lacking a leader for quite some time and they’ve propelled down the table which further emphasizes the importance of these characters in the squad.
