Danny Murphy urges Liverpool to resolve Jordan Henderson’s contract deadlock

Liverpool have been urged by former Anfield hero Danny Murphy to initiate the contract extension talks with Jordan Henderson that has suffered a shocking breakdown earlier this summer.

The 31-year-old Liverpool skipper had been backed to pen a new long-term deal on Merseyside and commit his future to Jurgen Klopp’s side with Henderson himself keen on seeing out his playing career in the Liverpool shirt.

However, the ongoing talks between the midfielder’s representatives and the Liverpool board ran into a major roadblock which gave birth to rumours that Jurgen Klopp could be forced to ship out the player as early as this summer’s transfer window.

Henderson’s current deal at Anfield expires in the summer of 2023 and should the England international not sign extended terms with the club, Liverpool will fear losing their midfield general for free, similar to Gini Wijnaldum’s recent exit and move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking to BBC Sport, former Liverpool man Murphy said that the Anfield giants should prioritise opening talks once again with Henderson for solving the contract deadlock and avoid a repeat of the Wijnaldum situation.

“It is hugely important that Liverpool get Jordan Henderson’s contract situation sorted out.”

“They have already lost Georginio Wijnaldum, who has been under-rated for the past few years.”

“I do expect Henderson to stay, because he has been so pivotal to their success, but they need to put those concerns to bed quickly. Losing both now would be unthinkable.”
