Ex-Red Phil Thompson voices disappointment over Brewster’s Liverpool exit this summer

Former Liverpool FC skipper Phil Thompson has voiced regrets over Rhian Brewster’s sale to fellow top-flight side Sheffield United this summer in an interview to Paddy Power.

Brewster signed for Chris Wilder’s side in the final week of the summer transfer window in a deal that brought in an amount worth £24 million for the Reds. The 20-year old had fallen down the pecking order at Anfield following Diogo Jota’s big-money move to Liverpool FC being finalized in a matter of weeks.

The 20-year old English forward had been touted to be one of the most highly-promising attacking talents to come through the ranks of the Liverpool FC youth academy and had been tipped for a prosperous future as a first-team player for the Reds, however, limited playing opportunities for the Merseyside giants led to Brewster sealing a move to Brammall Lane.

And Thompson expressed his disappointment at having seen his former side let go of the English starlet, despite the ex-Liverpool FC captain admitting that the player was in need of ample game time, something which could not be awarded to him while playing for the Premier League holders.

“On the outgoings, I’m disappointed that they decided to let Rhian Brewster go,” said Thompson.

“I’d like him to have stayed. I can see some of the reasons why, but if you were asking me whether to go with Brewster or Divock Origi, for me, it’d be Origi going.

“But on the football side, I can see he isn’t playing as many games, so maybe it’ll get him that first-team experience.
