Former Red Michael Owen claims Van Dijk as the best defender in the game

Van Dijk is the best defender in the game in the world at the moment after witnessing his top-notch performance last night, according to Liverpool’s ex legend.

Winning the Premier League, Champions League, and the League Cup this campaign wouldn’t have been possible without the Dutchman’s presence in Klopp’s backline for the past seasons.

Following their title tussle with Man City, as well as FA Cup and Champions League final qualifying, Merseyside are already on the brink of making history by completing the quadruple this season.

Owen believes that Van Dijk will be among the greatest ever center-backs to ever stepped into the world of football while he was covering the match on BT Sport alongside Rio Ferdinand.

“He probably scored a few more goals, we’re not talking much because we’re talking about the greatest here. Rio was the best center-back I had ever played with. Van Dijk, as a center-forward I look at him and think ‘what do you do against him?’ He’s bigger, faster, stronger than everyone, he’s brilliant on the ball, scores goals, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“The only thing that goes against him at the moment is his winners’ medals. One league, one Champions League. People like Rio, [Paolo] Maldini, [Paolo] Baresi, people you consider as the greatest have numerous so, that’s the only thing. As a one-off, I think how can you get any better than him.”

The Reds have had many defenders in the past, but a player like Van Dijk, who adds more qualities to the team in terms of going forward, there isn’t any footballer who can disagree that Liverpool’s no. 4 is among the best right now.
