Jamie Carragher impressed by Curtis Jones and backs him for major role at Liverpool

Anfield icon Jamie Carragher has been left impressed by the young midfielder Curtis Jones and has backed him for a major role for Liverpool in the time to come.

Jones has stepped up of late in the wake of Liverpool enduring an injury crisis in the midfield department with the likes of Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara sidelined with short-term injury layoffs with the latter in line to return the fold only after the forthcoming international break.

The 20-year-old Liverpool youth academy product found the back of the net with an absolute screamer in the 3-3 affair against Brentford and followed that up with another impactful showing in Champions League action earlier this week.

He recorded two assists for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the thumping 5-1 win over Porto in the midweek contest with the England U21 international looking all set to stake his claim for a regular berth on the starting team sheet.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, while speaking the This Is Melwood podcast, has also suggested that Jones’ ability to get himself on the scoresheet makes him an incredible talent who can prove to be a go-to option for Jurgen Klopp in midfield.

“When I watch United plan, who aren’t a patch on us as a team, you always feel there are four or five players on that pitch who could score a goal.”

“With Liverpool it always feels like there’s pressure on [Sadio] Mane and [Mohamed] Salah, really, to get the goals. And [Diogo] Jota when he plays.

“And I just think if Curtis can be the guy in midfield who can get that goal, that would almost cement his position in the team.”
