Liverpool dealt with a major setback in their pursuit of signing Khephren Thuram

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool’s pursuit of Khephren Thuram appears to have hit a setback, as Nice now intends to keep the player for another season.

The 22-year-old midfielder showcased his skills in the previous campaign, featuring in 35 Ligue 1 matches for Nice and contributing with two goals and six assists from a central-midfield position.

Thuram’s last club appearance was on May 13 during Nice’s 2-0 defeat against Strasbourg. Currently, he is representing the France Under-21 national team in the European Championship.

Nice’s desire to keep Thuram for another season could have significant implications for Liverpool’s transfer plans. Despite already signing Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion, Jurgen Klopp remains keen on strengthening his midfield for the upcoming season.

Liverpool has seen several midfielders depart, including Naby Keita and veteran James Milner, who has joined Brighton as they aim for success in the Europa League under Roberto De Zerbi.

While Thuram is a target for Liverpool, he is not the only midfield option being considered. The Reds have reportedly made a £60 million bid for Real Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni, although the Spanish club is expected to demand a fee closer to £68 million for the Frenchman’s departure.

Thuram will make a decision about his future after his international duty with France this summer, which means the Reds might have to wait until mid-July to determine his interest in joining Anfield.

In addition to Thuram, Liverpool are reportedly considering Romeo Lavia as a potential signing. The 19-year-old Belgian midfielder, who currently plays for Southampton, has drawn interest from both Liverpool and Arsenal.

Lavia impressed during his debut season in the Premier League, although the Saint’s relegation to the Championship dampened their overall campaign.

Thuram holds an advantage in terms of experience compared to Lavia, as the Frenchman has made 138 appearances for Nice since his free transfer move from Monaco in 2019.
