Liverpool eye a shock move for FC Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti

FC Barcelona outcast Samuel Umtiti has been identified by Liverpool FC as a potential signing this January to provide cover at centre-back following Virgil van Dijk’s major injury layoff.

The Dutchman was taken off the pitch at Goodison Park on Saturday during Liverpool FC’s 2-2 draw against arch-rivals Everton after being on the receiving end of a rather harsh challenge from Jordan Pickford.

Reports later confirmed that the 29-year old could miss possibly the remainder of the 2020-21 season with an ACL tear, and he would require surgery on his injured knee before undergoing a rehabilitation programme.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp is now in a fix as to fortify his options at the heart of the defence, with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez being the only first-team names within the squad of the Premier League champions.

Recent reports from Don Balon have suggested that the Reds will be interested in making a move for Umtiti when the winter transfer window reopens as Klopp seeks to add depth to his backline to carry on their title-defence with renewed energy and effort.

The French international was a regular fixture in the Barca lineup as of a season ago, however, has fallen down massively in the pecking order and could be tempted to seal a move to Anfield.
