Liverpool willing to fork out £43 million to land Atalanta defender Cristian Romero

Manchester United face some tough competition from their arch-rivals Liverpool in the race to land the signature of Atalanta central defender Cristian Romero in this summer’s transfer window.

Reports from The Express claim that Jurgen Klopp’s side have made the Argentine international a priority target this summer and are even willing to pay a fee northwards of £40 million to sign him.

Romero was a solid performer at the back for the Serie A giants this past season and with interest brewing in his services from abroad, Atalanta are believed to be open to parting ways with their defensive talent for a sizable transfer fee.

Liverpool’s interest in the 23-year-old centre-back comes after the arrival of Ibrahima Konate at Anfield last month in a move that significantly bolstered Klopp’s options in the heart of the backline which witnessed a seemingly never-ending injury crisis last time around.

With the long-term future of Anfield hero Nat Phillips uncertain beyond the summer amid Burnley acquiring the pole position to sign him, Jurgen Klopp will be aware of ensuring a steady squad depth at the ready to prove his side are in to reclaim their Premier League crown this coming season.
