Liverpool yet to open contract extension talks with veteran midfielder James Milner

Liverpool are yet to open contract extension talks with veteran midfielder James Milner whose current terms are up for renewal this coming summer.

Recent reports had suggested that the Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was keen to renew the 37-year-old Milner’s contract amid the possibility that the former Leeds United and Manchester City man could leave Anfield.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, despite Klopp planning a rebuild of the midfield department, the German coach remains a huge admirer of Milner’s experience, leadership and versatility and wants to offer him a one-year extension.

It is said that the Liverpool vice-captain would be open to staying put on the Merseyside for another year but the club have made no movement on that front since Klopp publically voiced his desire to retain Milner’s services earlier this year.

There is a chance that Milner could join another of Liverpool’s senior first-team figures, Roberto Firmino, in heading out the exit door after the latter confirmed his decision to Klopp to seek a fresh challenge when his contract expires in June.
