Injury Update

Thiago Alcantara expected to miss Champions League opener against Ajax

Thiago Alcantara could be a major absentee for Liverpool FC’s visit to Ajax as the Reds commence their 2020-21 Champions League campaign at the home of the Dutch champions.

The ex-Bayern Munich star was subject to a very rash tackle from Richarlison in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, with the latter’s challenge being deemed worthy of a red card by match official Michael Oliver. However, the Liverpool FC midfielder was able to continue on the pitch for the remainder of the game.

According to reports from TeamTalk, the summer signing for the Premier League champions is not an injury doubt but will be rested for the Ajax showdown as a mere precaution on the Merseyside club’s part.

Despite Jurgen Klopp confirming in his post-game reaction that Thiago had conveyed his injury fears to him, the Spanish international’s present situation is way better than what was initially expected in the aftermath of the Goodison Park fixture.

Thiago’s absence for the opening Champions League fixture for the Reds will be accompanied by Virgil van Dijk’s lengthy layoff being confirmed by Liverpool FC, with the Dutch centre-back set to have surgery on his damaged knee ligaments, following which he will be undergoing a rehabilitation programme.
