Ex-Villa defender Alan Hutton says Liverpool should move in for Timo Werner

Ex-Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton says Liverpool should move in for Timo Werner with the Chelsea striker’s future hanging in the balance beyond this summer.

Jurgen Klopp has added the Uruguyuan dangerman Darwin Nunez to his ranks in the ongoing transfer window with the 22-year-old arriving at Anfield from Benfica for a potential club record deal in Liverpool’s history books.

Despite suggestions that Klopp could be done with bringing in new recruits ahead of the start of the next season, Timo Werner’s name is one that has been linked with a move to Merseyside with his Chelsea future subject to much speculation as of late.

The Germany international forward player was one of the names on Jurgen Klopp’s shortlist before he joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020 but the transfer has proved inefficient for both parties involved.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Villa man Alan Hutton believes Liverpool should line up a swoop for the unsettled Stamford Bridge star who could prove to be a useful addition to the Reds out on the flanks with Sadio Mane leaving this summer to sign for Bayern.

“I think Werner can bring something with his pace and his trickery.

“I think he could fit into the system. I think if you look at the way Liverpool have played over the years Klopp has been there, he likes that type of winger coming in from the side of the pitch and I think that’s where he’s better.

“I don’t think Werner’s an out and out number nine to me, I think he misses too many opportunities but he’s a problem out on the wing, he’s a problem for defenders, the way Mane was and obviously with him leaving there’s possibly room.

“I’d be very surprised if Chelsea just let him go. With Lukaku leaving they won’t want to leave themselves short so I can’t see it happening.“
