Jamie Carragher passes verdict on where Liverpool need to strengthen next summer

Anfield hero Jamie Carragher reckons Liverpool need to add a couple of big-name signings to bolster their ranks to compete against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.

Liverpool had a very quiet transfer window this summer with French central defender Ibrahima Konate the sole purchase made by Jurgen Klopp despite the German eyeing up reinforcements for his midfield and attacking departments.

A strong start to the new season for the Reds has not been without its fair share of concerns on the injury front with Harvey Elliott, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones all on the recovery table in a setback to Klopp’s options in the centre of the park.

Carragher, however, while speaking on Sky Sports Overlap, said that Klopp should prioritise bringing in a new right-back for his side after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s absence last time around against Manchester City cost Liverpool dearly at the back.

Eyeing up a fresh face for the forward lineup was also mentioned by the former Reds defender who believes Liverpool could do with someone better than Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino as bench strength.

“There’s no doubt that Liverpool don’t have the strength of Manchester United, City or Chelsea. They just don’t, their squads are unbelievable.”

“But in terms of the 11, if you saw Liverpool’s 11, if they were playing Man City’s best team in a Champions League final or an FA Cup final – I’d still fancy Liverpool.

“Over the season, you won’t be getting that first 11, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] missed out against City and you saw the problems James Milner had.

“It’s not so much that Liverpool don’t have a great squad, they do, they’re just really short in probably two areas.

“Right back is a massive one as we saw against City, they’ve probably got the best set of centre-backs in the Premier League.

“The front players you’ve got Jota to add to Firmino, although that looks like a fight for a position. But I do think they’re an attacker short to go and win the league.

“With Salah and maybe Mane missing in January for the Africa Cup of Nations, someone better than Origi or Minamino on the bench, that these other teams have got.”
