Liverpool should sign a new midfielder before Jurgen Klopp’s woes increase

The underwhelming run of displays from the Liverpool midfield coupled with injury troubles have been a reason for the club’s horrid start to the season.

Last weekend’s shock defeat to the Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest at the City Ground was proof enough that Jurgen Klopp’s side lack the creativity in the centre of the park when the Spaniard Thiago Alcantara is out injured.

Thiago’s latest setback on the injury front has made many wonder when the former Bayern Munich maestro would be returning to the Liverpool fold and providing his side with the much-needed impetus going forward which has been seen missing in recent games despite the front line to rediscover their goalscoring streak. In hindsight, it was a bad decision for the Liverpool camp to not dip into the transfer market before the final days to sign a new midfielder to bolster their ranks, and when the situation called for an emergency recruitment to be made, in came the Brazil international Arthur Melo from Juventus in a season-long loan agreement.

Arthur, however, is yet to make his debut outing in the Liverpool shirt and his injury has ruled him out until after the New Year to make matters worse at Anfield for an under-pressure head coach Klopp who would be eyeing up reinforcements from the market when the transfer window reopens for business come January 1.

As rumours persist over the futures of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the latter of whom recently returned to the field after his spell on the sidelines, with their deals up for renewal next summer, it is expected of Klopp to splash the cash on a big-name signing to freshen his engine room options midway through the campaign.

Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho, the two exciting teenage talents at Anfield, have often been drafted in the central midfield roles this season and while the ex-Fulham pairing have impressed some with their displays, Klopp and his scouting team would be keen on a more natural midfield name to arrive in the coming transfer windows.

Elliott was at his best in the 3-0 win over Ajax in midweek’s Champions League group stage meeting in a game that saw the Reds put out a fairly convincing showing away from home turf.

But with the likes of Borussia Dortmund sensation Jude Bellingham and Newcastle United star Bruno Guimarães emerging on Liverpool’s radar, the supporters will surely be delighted to witness their team sign a high-profile player to prove capable of making the difference in the final third of the pitch.

Both Thiago and Jordan Henderson have turned north of 30, the much experienced and the ever reliable James Milner is also aged 36, and there is no clarity over the future of Naby Keita -a player who was signed back in 2019 for a big-money fee and handed Anfield icon Steven Gerrard’s No.8 shirt upon his arrival from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

There is time for Liverpool to turn around their faltering domestic campaign, one which sees them sit eighth in the Premier League table, and while a 12 point gap separates them from the table toppers Arsenal, Liverpool have it in themselves to replicate last season’s reversal of fortunes when they had closed in on Manchester City despite being 14 points behind at one stage in the title run.
