Newcastle United emerge as contenders to sign Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez

Newcastle United have emerged as contenders to sign Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez this summer as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his backline in time for the start of the next season.

Gomez penned an extension at Anfield only last summer amid speculation that Jurgen Klopp could part ways with the England international who has struggled to cement a regular berth on the Liverpool team sheet.

According to a report from Caught Offside, it is claimed that Newcastle are ready to allow captain Jamaal Lascelles to leave in the summer and the Magpies are eyeing up a move for the 25-year-old Gomez as his replacement.

Gomez’s new terms with Liverpool are not due to expire until 2027 and it would be interesting to see whether the boss Klopp is open to sanctioning his departure after a disappointing campaign from his side.

Gomez is a distant fourth-choice centre-back option for Klopp at present and his sale could raise funds for a new face to come through the Anfield door with reports suggesting that Liverpool are keen to sign a defender in the summer window.
