Reds Legend wants Liverpool to sign Timo Werner

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson would like to see prolific German striker Timo Werner complete a transfer to Anfield during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Timo Werner is capable of challenging Liverpool’s fabulous front three for a regular starting berth in Jurgen Klopp’s eleven, according to former Reds attacker Phil Thompson, who thinks the Red Bull Leipzig forward would be a “fantastic addition” for his old club.

Werner’s exploits at Leipzig over the last couple of seasons have seen him earn admiration from a number of top suitors across the European continent. The 24-year-old striker has seen his market value skyrocket in 2019-20, as his contribution of 27 goals in 36 games for the Bundesliga outfit has helped Julian Nagelsmann’s side challenge for the title while also reaching the Champions League quarter-finals in the process.

The Merseyside giants have been heavily linked with the German hitman over the recent months, and he is reportedly ready to complete a move to Anfield if the Reds meet his £52 million ($64m) release clause at Leipzig.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have led the line for the majority of Klopp’s reign at Liverpool, forming arguably the most deadly attacking trident in Europe.

Therefore it has been suggested that Werner might struggle to find his way into Liverpool’s starting line up given the firepower they already boast in the attacking third, but Thompson does not believe he would have any problem fitting in attack for Liverpool.

While speaking to Sky Sports, Thompson told reporters that the young attacker could add some much-needed dynamism to the Liverpool attack, “I think he’ll give a real challenge to the front three. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino – they look as though they’re set, We do have Divock Origi but I think everybody realises that he’s more of an impact player, for sort of the last 15, 20 minutes – but that’s not really good enough. We do need somebody a little bit better. Some people will say ‘Will Werner get in and will he want to come to Liverpool?’. I think he would and I think he does.”
